Plan A form of government is approved by Boston voters.

November 8, 1949

Voters approve a change in the city charter that establishes non-partisan preliminary elections for mayor and increases the power of the office by giving the mayor veto power over the city council. Supporters of the so-called “strong mayor” proposal got their question on the ballot by collecting the necessary 200,000 signatures before “reformers” supporting the Plan E (city manager) proposal did so.
